HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 13

Remembering the life of George Washington and his contribution
to the Nation.
Whereas, December 14, 1999, will be the two hundredth
anniversary of the death of George Washington, the father of our
nation and the protector of our liberties; and
Whereas, The standards established by George Washington's
steadfast character and devotion to duty continue to inspire all
men and women in the service of their country and in the conduct
of their private lives; and
Whereas, The Eastern Gateway Tourism Forum, through its
initiative of the George Washington Heritage Trail, requests all
West Virginians to participate in the observance of this
anniversary; and
Whereas, The example set by George Washington is of the
utmost importance to the future of the nations, and it is the
responsibility of private and government institutions to prepare
for the observation of the two hundredth anniversary of the death
of George Washington; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature of West Virginia hereby calls upon the
state of West Virginia and its people to remember the life of
George Washington and his contributions to the nation; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Governor is requested to issue a
proclamation calling upon the people of West Virginia to do the
following:
(a) Observe the two hundredth anniversary of the death of
George Washington with appropriate ceremonies and activities;
(b) Cause the tolling of bells at places of worship and
institutions of learning for the duration of one minute
commencing at eleven o'clock in the morning, Eeastern standard
time, throughout the state of West Virginia on the two hundredth
anniversary of the death of George Washington;
(c) Cause the lowering of the flag of the United States to
half staff on the anniversary of the death of George Washington;
and
(d) Cause and encourage patriotic and civic associations,
veterans and labor organizations, schools, universities and
communities of study and worship, together with citizens
everywhere, to develop programs and research projects during the
year 1999 that concentrate upon the life and character of George
Washington as it relates to the future of the nation and to the
development and welfare of the lives of free people everywhere;
and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Governor is hereby requested to
furnish a copy of this resolution to the representatives of other
governments throughout our nation and other countries in order to
notify them that our state and its people continue to cherish
the memory of George Washington with affection and gratitude.
